Interview with New Orleans Principal Gives Deeper Understanding to Mason Volunteers
On Day 3 of work I had the opportunity to interview Principal John C. Hiser of Edna Karr High School. Attending both grade school and college in the area, Hiser started teaching in 1970 and has been at Karr since 1980. Hiser has been the principal at Karr since 1985. As a respected member of the community for Hiser gave detailed insight into the problems facing his school and his city. Cru members and other Mason volunteers fell in love with the administration, students, and school as they painted doorways, provided lawn care, and interacted with several classes.

Mason Students Experience the Harsh Reality in New Orleans
Mason students were brought to tears after hearing local testimonies about how lives were ruined due to Hurricane Katrina. Students were busy gutting houses and doing surveys to find appropriate houses to rebuild while working on Day 2.

Students from George Mason University speak about their alternative spring break experience serving to revitalize the devastated city of New Orleans. Students were anxious to engage in such activities as gutting houses, picking weeds, and tutoring local elementary students.
